PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — After more than 17 hours, rescue workers recovered the body of an 18-year-old who went missing while swimming in Alcyon Lake in Pitman, New Jersey.

Neighboring officials with Camden County Emergency Management said the 18-year-old was reported missing Sunday around 9 p.m.

He was a senior at Pitman High School and was trying to swim across the lake as part of a scavenger hunt, but he went under.

The Borough of Pitman, on its Facebook page, identified the teen as Victor Rodriguez. A statement by Mayor Michael Razze reads, "The mutual love and support of our community will help to carry us through this difficult time. On behalf of the entire borough, our deepest condolences to his family, friends, fellow students, and the PHS Class of 2023."

The school canceled all exams on Monday, and emotional support services are available to all students.
