MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Montgomery County officials say the COVID-19 positivity rate is the lowest it's been since the pandemic began 31 weeks ago. But they have a reminder to parents that kids playing youth sports need to follow safety guidelines.
Montgomery County Commissioner Val Arkoosh said Montgomery County's positivity rate remains low despite increases in some neighboring counties.
She said they continue to see social gatherings as the leading cause of spread of the disease.
"Sometimes there's music playing so people are talking more loudly. It is an easy place for transmission to occur," she explained.
And she said there are preventable cases among youth sports.
"There doesn't appear to be transmission on the field. But social gatherings before or after games, maybe locker rooms, you know that kind of activity," she said.
Arkoosh said it's a lot easier to follow the safety plans, like staying 6 feet apart and wearing masks when on the sidelines or dugouts, than it is to have to quarantine an entire team if someone tests positive.
"Nobody wants to put their son or daughter in a room with the door shut for 14 days and bring them their meals and not let them leave," she said.
