PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A summer camp in Montgomery County is now open again after it had to close all last week because of a COVID-19 outbreak. That is special news for campers who have enjoyed reuniting with friends after a strange year.
All campers and staff at Camp Kef at the Kaiserman Jewish Community Center in Wynnewood got a COVID-19 test after there were 12 confirmed cases. As long as those test came back negative, the campers are eager return, as Alan Scher, CEO of the JCC, knows all too well.
"I’m not only the CEO of the Kaiserman JCC, I’m the parent of a Camp Kef camper, and the last year, year and a half, has been traumatic for her, for so many campers, socially isolated from friends and loved ones," Scher said.
Scher says they wanted to reopen as soon as they could because kids really need camp these days after dealing with a crazy school year.
"The impact they have in coming together is really inspiring. I see it as a gift to these children, more important this summer than it's ever been."
The camp has updated protocols for the rest of summer to protect everyone from the virus.
Camp Kef was open last summer and didn’t have a single covid outbreak.
