UPPER POTTSGROVE, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The heat wave ended with a bang as severe storms rolled through the Philadelphia region Wednesday evening and knocked down trees and power lines.

The heavy rain and strong winds left a mark, especially in parts of Montgomery County, where a number of trees and power lines came crashing down.

In Upper Pottsgrove, a massive tree on the left side of a front lawn uprooted and landed on a two-story home on Mervine Street. Limbs punctured the roof and punched through the top left window.

The storm really picked up around 5 p.m., and the tree toppled. But John Mack, who lives across the street, couldn’t hear it.

“The wind was so loud we couldn’t hear anything,” he said. “We couldn’t even see their house. That’s how hard the rain and the wind was going by.”

Mack called 911 and, when it was safe, he went outside to check on the couple who live in the damaged home. The two were not injured, and they received assistance from the Red Cross.

The National Weather Service on Thursday said the damage appears to have been caused by straight-line winds.

While many properties lost power Wednesday night, outages were not widespread as of Thursday morning. PECO reported around 2,500 homes and businesses without power at 8 a.m. About two-thirds of those affected were in Montgomery County.
