CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Montgomery County has tripled the fine for e-bike violations on county trails.

The Montgomery County Board of Commissioners on Thursday voted to increase the fine from $100 to $300, citing the increased use of e-bikes and subsequent accidents and injuries on county trails.

“We’re being proactive by raising the fine, making the public aware, and working with local authorities to enforce violations,” Neil Makhija, the chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, said in a statement. “So when you’re on the trails, know the rules, follow them, and spread the word.”

There are restrictions based on weight, power and speed. The e-bikes should not weigh more than 100 pounds, they must have a motor that’s more than 750 watts, and they must have working pedals. There is also a 15-mile-per-hour speed limit for bicycles, e-bikes, scooters, tricycles and other devices that are used on the trails.

There are more than 100 miles of trails that go through Montgomery County and connect to Philadelphia and other counties, including the Schuylkill River Trail, which had nearly 1 million visitors in 2024, county officials said.
