PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The chances of developing depression at some point in our lives is 24% for women and 10% for men, according to MDedge Family Medicine. These statistics are based on reported cases, but we know that many people do not seek help.

One group that may not be accounted for is the elderly. For people over 60, the chances of developing depression is quite real. There are numerous reasons ranging from loss of friends and loved ones, chronic illness and reflections on past years and events.

According to the report, there needs to be a greater attempt at outreach to support the elderly. Depression can be treated quite effectively, but if care is not offered, people often suffer in silence.
