NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Data from Camden police show nearly all of the guns recently recovered have been from out of state.
Since the beginning of 2022, Camden police have recovered 427 guns, 93% of which were purchased in another state, according to Camden County Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr.
“We have very good gun laws in New Jersey. Unfortunately, weaker gun laws in other states make guns much more readily available to people than they should be in New Jersey,” Cappelli said.
Cappelli added the easy access to illegal guns makes it harder for cops to do their jobs.
“So it’s really clear that there needs to be some national legislation concerning the registration and ownership of guns to make it safer to own a gun in the United States.”
Earlier this month, on the Fourth of July, a shooting in Camden injured a six-year-old girl. Officials believe a teenager from Philadelphia pulled the trigger – the case remains under investigation.
Cappelli was criticized by Philadelphia elected officials when he called the city a “society of lawlessness,” and said criminals need to stay on their side of the river. He stands by the remarks.
“I’ve had an overwhelming amount of support. I went to an event in Camden just the other day. Residents were thanking me for my words and comments.”
He says police put their lives at risk each time they confiscate a weapon and he hopes there will soon be change at the national level with gun laws.
