PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police say they have a man in custody, who they are questioning about the stabbing of two women who were found dead Tuesday afternoon in a home in the city’s Lawncrest section.
Philadelphia police say the two victims are 75-year-old Angela Trejo and her daughter, 58-year-old Alma Barberena.
Responding to a report of a "person with a gun" just after 1:30 p.m., officers from the 2nd District arrived at the house on the 6000 block of Bingham Street, near Comly Road, according to police.
"When the officer got here, a neighbor was able to admit them to the property," said Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore. In the basement of the home, the two women were found stabbed multiple times throughout their bodies. They were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
“It's still very early, but we're trying to determine what the motive is and what occurred here,” he said.
Investigators believe the women were killed sometime in the morning. And they believe the killings could be domestic in nature. Vanore said it didn’t appear that there was any type of break-in.
Police say they have a male in custody, whom they are continuing to question about the incident, but they have not named him as a suspect.
Residents say they are surprised this happened in their otherwise quiet neighborhood.
“I feel disturbed,” said Marylee Rodriguez.
“You don't see stuff like this happening, especially on a little block like this. You don't see anything popping off, really.”
Trejo and Barberena were Philadelphia’s 99th and 100th homicide victims this year.
