PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A motorcyclist was killed Saturday afternoon in Northeast Philadelphia when a car detached from the back of a tow truck and struck him, police said.

Police said the crash happened around 4:13 p.m. on the 4000 block of Frankford Avenue. A 2016 silver Ford F-250 tow truck was traveling southbound while towing a 2005 silver Dodge Magnum when the towed vehicle detached, entered northbound lanes.

The motorcyclist 39-year-old Jason Harvey of Southampton, Pennsylvania was struck head on. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.

Police said the tow truck driver fled the scene after the crash. The truck was later found unoccupied in the parking lot of an apartment building on the 1000 block of East Lycoming Avenue.

Authorities said the operator’s identity remains unknown, and anyone with information is asked to contact police.
