PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A husband and daughter are facing charges for the neglect of a Chester County woman, also known as their wife and mother.
The Pennsylvania Attorney General Office says the unidentified 71-year-old woman was found dead in a West Lincoln Highway home nearly two years ago on July 20, 2021. The woman, emaciated with multiple “severe and untreated bedsores,” died of a stroke. They say the bedsores – one of which, so severe that bone was exposed – likely occurred from lack of repositioning.
She was dependent on her daughter, Kaci Nightingale, 38, of Coatesville, and her husband, Richard Nightingale, 76, of Coatesville, as she could not get out of bed on her own, was non-verbal, and suffered from dementia.
The Attorney General's Office says Kaci was employed as a personal care attendant – funded through Medicaid – to take care of her mother. Richard claimed himself as his wife’s primary caretaker.
“The facts of this case are extremely disturbing,” said Attorney General Michelle Henry. “For a woman in need of care to be callously neglected by her own family is hard to fathom.”
Both Kaci and Richard turned themselves in on Friday. Their bail was set at $150,000 each. Kaci is being charged with neglect of a care-dependent person, Medicaid fraud, and related offenses. Richard is being charged with neglect of a care-dependent person.
