PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Speed cameras could be coming to Broad Street under a bill introduced by Councilmember Mark Squilla this week.

He says the goal is to make the road safer for all users.

“The whole length is a concern — not only with the issues we have with some of our motorcycles, ATVs and other things, but also with vehicles just making that stretch of the road unsafe,” Squilla said.

Data from the Bicycle Coalition found that four of the six highest crash intersections in the city are on Broad Street. The city’s data says 90% of crashes involve a speeding driver.

Squilla says the Broad Street cameras will be similar to the ones on Roosevelt Boulevard, which he says have effectively reduced speeds. There would be a warning period followed by fines of $100 to $150 for drivers caught on camera going over the speed limit.

The bill doesn’t say how many cameras would be used or where they would go. That will be up to police and transportation officials.

Squilla says the city will study whether the cameras are effective in improving safety.
