MEDIA, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A new emergency care facility is on its way to Delaware County thanks to a multi-million dollar effort from state lawmakers.
Led by state Sen. Tim Kearney, lawmakers were able to free up $4 million from Pennsylvania’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program for Main Line Health to build a much-needed emergency care facility in Delaware County.
“We’re looking forward to a point where we can announce a new emergency room very quickly,” said Kearney, “gives us a great chance to set something else up, really start to meet the healthcare needs that are going unfilled right now.”
He said Pennsylvania’s fifth-largest county is still trying to figure out how to fill the healthcare void after the closure of Crozer Health.
“We are dealing with the aftermath of the healthcare disaster when a private equity company basically took a great hospital system and ran it into the ground,” said Kearney.
It left Delaware County with just two operating hospitals — Riddle and Mercy Fitzgerald — down from six.
“There’s a lot of people who are going to Riddle, a lot of people going to Mercy Fitzgerald, but we’re also seeing there’s a lot of people just not seeking care,” said Kearney.
The new facility will feature a full-service emergency department with treatment bays, CT scanners, radiology rooms, an ultrasound room and an outpatient laboratory.
There is no date yet for when construction will begin on the new emergency center.
