SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — As the weather gets nicer, more and more people will start tackling projects around the house. But a utility company says it's important to remember to call 811 before you dig.

If you're installing a new mailbox or a fence or even want to expand a flower bed, you need to call 811 before doing any digging.

"Some of the utilities are only six inches deep," said Brent Schomber, president of South Jersey Gas.

Schomber said they will send someone out to mark all the lines on your property so your shovel or auger doesn't rupture any gas lines or other utilities underground.

"Also, if you're hiring a contractor — I know this is pool season, a lot of folks are having some stuff done, concrete and what have you — make sure that they call too, and don't allow the work to start unless those lines are marked."

He urges people call 811 three business days before the work begins — it's free and required by law. Schomber also advises you to have the whole property checked, because sometimes utility lines come through unexpected places, depending on the property layout.

According to Schomber, a recent study found half of homeowners don't plan on calling 811 before starting a new project.
