PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A New Jersey State Police detective from Atlantic County has been convicted in connection with a 2023 high-speed chase that killed a motorcyclist.
Mark Campagna, 47, of Mays Landing, was found guilty Thursday of endangering another person.
The chase happened June 20, 2023, on Route 206 in Springfield Township and stretched for miles.
Officials said Campagna was off duty and driving an unmarked take-home State Police vehicle when he encountered and followed Omar Kebbabi, 24, of Queens, New York.
Authorities said that although he was required to contact law enforcement, Campagna did not. Prosecutors said both men reached speeds over 100 mph during the chase and changed lanes several times. Campagna never activated his lights or sirens.
Shortly before 5 p.m., Kebbabi crashed into a car making a left turn, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Campagna faces a maximum sentence of 18 months in state prison and a $10,000 fine. His police license must be revoked, by law. Sentencing is scheduled for July 30.
