The van driver was assisted by first responders at the scene.
The New Jersey State Police said Fajardo served them for more than 16 years, and that Fajardo twice served the New Jersey Army National Guard.
Fajardo, who was 41, leaves behind a wife and three children.
"The entire New Jersey State Police family and extended law enforcement community extends our deepest sympathy and commitment of support to the Fajardo family during this difficult time," the State Police said in a statement.
