NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A violent nor’easter left a huge mess at the Jersey Shore over the weekend, causing major flooding and beach erosion.
Along the north end of Atlantic City, some small cliffs block access to the beach. The waves took tons of sand and huge bites out of the dunes just outside the Ocean Resort Casino — the drops are 6 to 10 feet in some places.
Ron, who walks the beach a few days each week, said this storm ruined much of the recent beach replenishment work.
“I watched them do the sand replenishment. All that’s gone,” he said.
“Back to square one. But this is normal for a nor’easter. But this is more. I think this is more than [Hurricane] Sandy.”
Officials in Atlantic City said they didn’t have to make any ocean rescues over the weekend. The fire department helped a couple of dozen people escape from homes and cars in flood-prone areas.
In Egg Harbor Township, police said nine people and a dog were rescued from a couple of flooded motels.
In Wildwood, the bayside took the worst of it, as areas west of New Jersey Avenue were under 2 to 3 feet of water. The beach also flooded. The water reached all the way to the boardwalk, which is quite the distance, but Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. said it’s not too uncommon.
Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. said they are still cleaning things up and are working hard to get everything back to normal. He does not expect many lingering effects.
“Well, we have a couple of events this weekend on the beach, so we gotta see if that could happen. I’m thinking maybe not.”
The storm also knocked out power to thousands of people across the region. By Monday afternoon, only a couple dozen were still without power.
