SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A federal judge in Camden has approved $2.5 billion in settlements with DuPont and 3M over PFAS contamination in New Jersey.
These settlements resolve years-long litigation over so-called forever chemicals polluting communities all over the state, including in South Jersey.
Ed Potosnak, New Jersey’s acting DEP commissioner, called it a “historic moment” but said it’s “only the beginning of what will be a long road to restore our environment from the unfortunate legacy of these chemicals.”
DuPont agreed to pay $2 billion, and 3M is paying $500 million over 25 years under the terms of the settlement.
Money received by the state goes into an abatement trust fund to pay for the expensive soil and water remediation in places like Pennsville and Carney’s Point.
