NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is less than two years away and New Jersey is already planning for the monumental occasion.

With more revolutionary war battles fought here than any place else, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy says the state will lead in finding exciting and interesting ways to tell stories of the past and how those stories shape our future.

“Because the story of New Jersey is the story of our people banding together to revolutionize the world for the better,” Murphy said. “It’s the story, as we all know, of George Washington leading the continental army across the icy waters of the Delaware River so they could save the American Revolution from being extinguished by the British.”

Murphy says Pennsylvania and Massachusetts often get more attention for their roles in forming America, and he says historic sites in the Garden State deserve just as much.

“Let us seize this opportunity to prove that we are the essential destination for discovering the spirit of the American Revolution,” he said.

There’s a new website, revnj.org, with all sorts of content and schedules for live events in the run-up to the grand anniversary celebrations.
