TRENTON, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — New Jersey is among 26 states suing the Trump Administration, accusing the White House of attaching illegal, politically-motivated conditions on certain federal funding.
The states see it as a way the administration is trying to get them to comply with its policies.
New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said the president wants to withhold federal disaster relief and counter terrorism funding if states don’t turn over voter rolls, change election laws, or help enforce immigration laws.
“These conditions violate the administrative procedure act, ignore the constitution, and threaten the safety and security of all Americans,” said Davenport.
Davenport said federal judges have repeatedly sided with states in similar cases and she expects the same will happen again.
President Trump has threatened to cut funding by 20% unless states use paper ballots and verify citizenship for all voters. Just two days ago, New Jersey revealed more than 6,600 noncitizens were on the state’s voter rolls for three years through what Governor Mikie Sherril said was a software glitch under the previous administration.
