PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Many animal shelters throughout the country are running out of room, and adoptions are at a monumental low. Experts blame inflation and COVID. Now a famous dog and a Phillies All-star are coming to the rescue.
It all began with a comment Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos made during All-Star festivities last week.
“I think that a dog that can talk and helps people by solving mysteries is a superhero.”
That’s Castellanos explaining to a reporter why Scooby-Doo is his favorite superhero. Naturally, a video of the moment went viral.
A company called In The Clutch Apparel created a Castellanos-inspired Scooby-Doo T-shirt. And Castellanos’ wife, Jess, suggested that a portion of the proceeds from sales of the shirt should benefit the Pennsylvania SPCA.
“Lots of people were getting on board and thinking what an interesting concept — not maybe Superman, but Scooby Doo,” said Gillian Kocher, a spokesperson for the PSPCA.
“And a T-shirt was created by a company with Nick’s backing, and they asked us if we wanted to be the beneficiaries of that — and of course at the Pennsylvania SPCA we certainly jumped at the opportunity.”
The shirt shows an image of hands pulling open a shirt to expose a collar and dog tag with the initials “SD.” Castellanos’ number 8 is on the back.
Now, in the best way, the beloved crime-solving cartoon canine really is coming to the rescue.
“We anticipate that fans ordering these shirts will show up at the game this weekend, and hope they do, because it really does save lives,” Kocher said. “And what a fun way to do it — with a cartoon superhero who is now saving lives of real dogs.“
The shirts are available online for $30 — 20% of which goes to benefit the PSPCA.
