New Jersey home health care workers eligible for parking placards

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Home nurses, health aides and others who make house calls are now eligible for special parking placards from New Jersey's Motor Vehicle Commission.

These bright yellow placards hang from the car's rearview mirror and come with parking perks, according to MVC spokesman William Connolly.

"The placard use is going to allow for daytime or overnight parking that's normally reserved for municipal residents in municipal parking lots and also college and university parking lots," he explained. "It's also going to allow for parking at meters up to 24 hours with no penalties."

Connolly said this will help home health care workers provide better care, and also help companies keep and recruit employees.

"This is going to be provided for nurses, nurses aides, home health aides, personal care assistants, hospice workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech pathologists," he said.

Individual health care workers are not allowed to apply for the placards. "The agency itself has to apply for the placards through the process that's outlined on our website, and that’s something we really just want to drive home," Connolly indicated.

The placards can only be used when the employee is working, and not for personal purposes or during off hours. The law approving them was passed in 2018.
