NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A 75-year-old ice skating coach has been arrested and charged after officials said he had a sexual relationship with a former student in the 1990s.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said Ralph Marinelli, of Ventnor, groomed a former student of his during their time at Young’s Skating Center in Mays Landing.
Investigators said the victim, now in her 40s, kept a detailed journal describing interactions between the two while she was between the ages of 14 and 17, from 1992 to 1995. There were also several recent recorded phone calls and an in-person meeting where Marinelli said “it shouldn’t have happened” when the victim brought up the topic of their sexual past.
After being charged, he was released from custody. There’s another pre-indictment hearing scheduled for Aug. 12.
KYW Newsradio reached out to Young’s Skating Center for comment and to find out if Marinelli is still working there, but has not heard back.
