SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A new law signed by Gov. Mikie Sherrill puts some guardrails on data center development in New Jersey.
Data centers, under the new law, must track and report their water and energy usage to the state Board of Public Utilities every six months.
“We’re not going to let these developers operate in the shadows,” said Sherrill. “I’m just as focused on making sure data centers are accountable to the communities that they’re built in.”
She said if companies are going to build in New Jersey, they better invest in New Jersey, too.
“Companies need to come to the table with solutions and not just empty promises,” she added. “It’s simple: If you want to build here, you have to play by our rules.”
These steps aren’t enough for some progressive groups. The Pinelands Alliance and Climate Revolution Action Network are demanding a moratorium on data centers and say the state must ban them before it’s too late.
