MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA (KYW Newsradio) — A 27-year-old maintenance worker from North Penn School District has pleaded guilty to hitting and killing a man while driving a school district van last year.

Nicholas Shaw of Logan Drive in Hatfield pleaded guilty to accidents involving death and is sentenced to 1 ½-to-three-years in state prison.

On Oct. 27, 2022, Shaw struck and killed 83-year-old Linford Michener while he was walking his dog along his property line on Oak Park Road near Koffel Road in Hatfield. He died about an hour later.

Michener’s wife told police she was outside at the time, heard the van hit something, and saw it slow down before driving away. She described the van as a blue and white work van with words on the side. She didn’t realize her husband had been fatally injured at the time.

Police later found video from a nearby home and identified the van by the North Penn School District markings on the side.

District officials say Shaw was driving the van while working with the groundskeeping crew. Video from the school facility lot shows Shaw getting in and out of the van at times that match up with when Michener was hit.

Authorities say the district cooperated with the investigation.
