PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Five people were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out in a North Philadelphia building early Tuesday morning.

Around 3 a.m., firefighters responded to a property near 29th Street and Lehigh Avenue. Dou Hueng Chinese restaurant is at the street level, with two floors of apartments above it.

The five injured people from the apartments were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. It took about an hour to get the fire under control but crews stayed on the scene. Thick white smoke spilled through the neighborhood as firefighters took care of hot spots.

DC Auto Tags, which is next to the building where the fire broke out, was also damaged.

"We have some broken walls and all of our windows are broken, because that's protocol, they said. But it's fixable and no one died," said Nakia Brown, whose cousin owns the shop.

Tenants who live above the restaurant were displaced. The Widener Library branch, which is also adjacent to the Chinese restaurant, did not sustain any damage. The library opened for regular hours on Tuesday.

Officials with the Philadelphia Fire Marshal's Office and the Department of Licenses and Inspections were on scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
