PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A North Philadelphia organization is giving away new books just in time for kids’ summer reading lists.

Dime, 15, says Tree House Books (1430 W Susquehanna Ave.) is a North Philadelphia treasure that offers the community a quiet space to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

“It’s, like, full of books and learning. It’s for everyone,” he said.

“Just looking for something like this in the community — it’s really nice to see.”

Dime was out walking with his friend JM when, they say, they were drawn to a colorful bookshelf standing outside the nonprofit with a sign reading “FREE!”

They both picked up a few books.

“I got “Explore Melbourne,” “A Guide to Barcelona,” “The Book of Lists,” said JM.

Besides helping make travel plans, JM says, books allow him to imagine places he’s never been.

Luis says his son and daughter both go to Tree House after school.

“They also receive free books for summer. It really helps out, because they love reading,” Luis said.

As Michael Bricks with Tree House Books explains, their goal is to get kids and the community reading more. And this spring, they have a lot going on to encourage people to pick up a book.

“This spring, we’re going to be entering our after-school program. Also, the giving library is going to be open after school for kids if they want to come by,” Bricks said.

“We’re also gearing up for our summer programs. We have two programs you sign up for now.”

And there’s stuff for adults, too, Bricks says.

“We do these quarterly book swaps, and they pop up all around town. We’d love for you folks to come by. It’s a great opportunity for you to come and meet other book lovers.”
