PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A senior citizen was killed and two others were wounded in a broad-daylight shooting Tuesday in North Philadelphia.
It happened around 5 p.m. near 22nd Street and Ridge Avenue, a block from the Martin Luther King Rec Center. Surveillance cameras captured four people getting out of a silver-colored SUV, then opening fire.
“It appears four individuals get out of that SUV on both sides, the driver’s side and passenger side, and began firing shots,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small. The four individuals then got back in the SUV and fled south on Ridge Avenue.
Officers found three men at the scene — ages 31, 71 and 78 — all suffering from gunshot wounds. The 31-year-old was shot several times in the lower back and leg. The 71-year-old was shot twice in the back, and the 78-year-old shot once in the back.
The three victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where the 78-year-old was pronounced dead.
The other two victims were listed at first in critical condition but have been upgraded to stable.
Police said more than 50 spent shell casings were found at the scene from several semi-automatic weapons.
“We have over 50 spent shell casings on both sides of the street and some on the sidewalk,” Scott added. “There is one vehicle parked unattended struck by gunfire, and there was a business struck multiple times by gunfire.”
Investigators are working to determine a motive. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police.
