PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Trenton officer was injured late Monday morning after a collision caused their car to plow through the fence of a home in the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia. Officials say it was the aftermath of a 20-mile police pursuit that started in New Jersey.
Officials tell KYW Newsradio that a Trenton police officer was assigned to a New Jersey State Police investigation. It was not disclosed what the investigation was, but officials said the suspect involved led law enforcement on a high-speed chase from Trenton to Holmesburg around 11:30 a.m.
When they got to that section of the city, the state trooper vehicle that had been following the suspect collided with a white SUV at Torresdale and Sheffield avenues before it slammed into a fence and hit a car that was parked on the other side. The driver of the SUV drove right into the pursuit.
Judith lives at the home where the crash happened. She said accidents have happened at that intersection before, but she’s never seen one like this.
“I even thought, don't tell me that we have another plane crash or something like that. I was scared because it was so loud.”
Jeff lives behind Judith and was trying to cross the street when this all happened.
“It was my turn to cross, and the speeding car came by over 100 miles an hour, a little black, possibly Nissan,” Jeff said. “The police car went off the road, hit some parked cars, and pieces of the fence were flying everywhere, just everywhere. Brand new fence the neighbors got.”
Officials say the Trenton officer, as well as the person in the SUV, was injured in the collision. Both were taken to a nearby hospital and have since been treated and released.
As for the suspect or suspects, officials say they got away. An investigation is underway.
