PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An off-duty Philadelphia police officer is dead, and a man is injured after a shooting in Eastwick Sunday morning.
Police said a 29-year-old off-duty officer was shot multiple times just after 4 a.m. outside of a hookah bar near 73rd Street and Woodland Avenue. A 35-year-old man was also shot and is listed in critical condition.
Police said someone assaulted responding officers who tried to take the two men to the hospital. That person is now in custody.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said the unidentified officer was in “extremely critical condition and, unfortunately, through the valiant efforts of Penn, he suffered a catastrophic wound and lost his life.”
He said they will release the officer’s name once the family has been notified. He was assigned to the 12th Police District.
Ms Lewis lives just across the street from where the men were shot. She said shootings happen too often, and she does not feel safe.
“I am so scared. I don’t even sit out in front of my door because it’s so much crime going on.”
A gun was recovered at the scene; officers did not disclose how it is connected to the incident. No suspects believed to be involved in the shooting have been arrested.
“This is a homicide investigation, and we’re confident we will find the individuals who did this,” Bethel said.
