PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An off-duty Philadelphia police officer was killed and a man was injured in a shooting in Eastwick Sunday morning.
Police said an off-duty officer, 29-year-old Alhassane Barry, was shot multiple times just after 4 a.m. outside of a hookah bar near 73rd Street and Woodland Avenue. A 35-year-old man was also shot and is listed in critical condition.
Police said the shooting happened after a fight broke out between Barry, the 35-year-old and the suspect inside the bar, then spilled into the street.
“We recovered evidence that showed that they had words; we don’t know what those words were. They were quick words that we see on video,” said Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore.
There was then an assault, followed by a separation and gunshots fired at Barry and the 35-year-old.
“The 35-year-old was hit and goes down out of the scene of the camera, and the other male was shot multiple times as that person flees the area,” Vanore explained.
Police said someone assaulted responding officers who tried to take the two men to the hospital. That person is now in custody.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said Barry was in “extremely critical condition and, unfortunately, through the valiant efforts of Penn, he suffered a catastrophic wound and lost his life.”
Barry was assigned to the 12th Police District. He had two years of service. The 35-year-old is expected to physically recover.
A gun was recovered at the scene; officers did not disclose how it is connected to the incident. No suspects believed to be involved in the shooting have been arrested. However, on Monday afternoon, police released photos of the believed suspect.
He is described as 6-foot-tall, with a thin-to-medium build, and medium-to-bushy “cropped” hair. Police believe he is in his mid-to-late 20s. He was last seen wearing a black hooded jacket, black pants, a light blue surgical mask and black sneaker-style boots.
They said he also had a long key chain hanging from the back of his pants and had a large wristwatch on.

Before the shooting, the man was seen walking to the scene from 73rd Street and Buist Avenue. After the shooting, he ran south.
Ms. Lewis lives just across the street from where the men were shot. She said shootings happen too often, and she does not feel safe.
“I am so scared. I don’t even sit out in front of my door because it’s so much crime going on,” she said.
Police are looking through surveillance footage in the area — some of which, obtained by newsgathering partners NBC10, shows a fight outside the lounge, then gunshots.
“This is a homicide investigation, and we’re confident we will find the individuals who did this,” Bethel said.
Barry was laid to rest on Monday. Services took place at a mosque in Southwest Philadelphia, just blocks away from the site of the shooting.
