PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An off-duty police officer was stabbed in Grays Ferry Tuesday afternoon.

Police say it happened when a physical altercation broke out between him and a man along the 1700 block of South 32nd Street near Morris Street around 4:30 p.m.

The officer was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

The man was taken into custody and brought to a different hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown.

"This is a quiet block, it really is, we just literally blocked the block off for a cookout, a lot of our neighbors, we all get along and everything,” Francis Jones, who lives on the block, told our newsgathering partners at NBC10. “This is usually a quiet block, so for somebody to get stabbed, that's crazy.”

What led to the stabbing is not yet known. An investigation is underway.
