PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man is in critical condition after he was shot by police in West Philadelphia Friday evening.

Police said they were called to the 5100 block of Funston Street, not far from 51st Street and Haverford Avenue, around 5:15 p.m. for a report of a man holding a gun to his head in the middle of the street.

First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford said when officers arrived at the scene, they made a perimeter around the 37-year-old man and engaged in a dialogue to try to get him to put the gun down.

The man then went on the porch of an abandoned house and pointed the gun at the officers, but did not discharge. That’s when seven officers opened fire, striking him multiple times.

Stanford said Friday was the second night in a row officers were on Funston Street for an incident involving the 37-year-old. On Thursday, police responded to a domestic incident involving his significant other and were able to resolve the situation.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital and is listed in critical condition. All seven officers are on administrative duty as the internal investigation plays out.
