Often divided, this Facebook group came together to help their pandemic-strained Bensalem neighbors

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Bensalem Proud community Facebook group is normally a place where neighbors air grievances and bring up challenging discussions. See: the 2020 presidential election.

But a recent topic caught other neighbors' attention. Some posted that they had no food for Thanksgiving due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, or they didn't know how they would be able to buy gifts for their children for the upcoming holidays.

Facebook group administrator Stacey Champion said the community page quickly filled with offers of help.

"It really blew up," she said. "It is always great to see people come together in that sense. We constantly see the same people commenting and posting, but on these posts, I saw people that I have never really seen before say, 'I'm here. I'll help. What do you need?'

"It was just absolutely amazing and heartwarming. I think we all needed to see that."

Champion said it exemplifies the meaning of giving thanks, and even though you can't physically go near your neighbors right now, it doesn't mean you can't help them.

"It really brings back that whole idea of being there for one another through the good and bad times," she said.

"It is quite amazing that this small — yet big — town of 60,000 or so people are always willing, no matter whether you have the same political beliefs, to come together, and we are all truly there to help one another."
