PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia Open Streets made a return Sunday, as it gives people a chance to explore the city differently and allows retailers to make some extra money.
The promenade of sorts, which takes place every Sunday in April from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., is an extension of public space for pedestrians to shop, stroll, and socialize along seven blocks of car-free streets from 15th and Walnut Streets to Rittenhouse Square.
Giavana Pruiti with the Center City District said not only is Open Streets good for people who are out and about, but it’s also good for business. She said that when the event debuted last fall, businesses reported that their revenue was up by at least 55%.
“Our retailers have said to us, hey we can make our entire month in a couple of hours on an open streets day,” said Pruiti.
Kenny Rosario-Pugh played his electric guitar for passersby.
“It’s a good vibe here,” he said.
Pruiti said there’s everything from seating pods to stilt walkers for people to enjoy as they peruse the streets.
