DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A diesel spill from an overturned tanker truck has closed part of the Route 1 Media bypass in Upper Providence. The closure is expected to last through rush hour.

The crash happened around 9 a.m. Monday, near mile marker 39. About 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel leaked onto the roadway. The driver was able to escape the tanker and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The truck is badly damaged, with the back wheels detached. What caused the accident and the driver’s condition are not yet known.

It is not clear if any of the hazardous material spilled into the Ridley Creek. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Services is on the scene. Drivers are advised to avoid the area until further notice.

As of 5:30 p.m., the truck was removed from the site. The southbound side is open, but the northbound side remains closed. Delays are expected through at least 6 p.m.
