Pennsylvania records highest single-day increase of new COVID-19 cases

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For the first time ever, Pennsylvania has seen a daily increase of more than 3,000 new cases of the coronavirus.

On Friday, state health officials reported nearly 3,400 additional positive cases, including 742 in Philadelphia.

The state number shatters the previous day's record for the single highest daily increase of 2,900.

Philadelphia Health Commissioner Tom Farley said the positivity rate for testing is at 9.1% — the highest it's been since mid-May.

He said the increase in the case count is being seen in every age group, from children to people in their 70s, and in every race and ZIP code.

The statewide total is now just shy of 224,000 cases since the start of the pandemic in March.

Officials also confirmed 38 new COVID-19 deaths.

Testing in Pennsylvania, meanwhile, has reached a record number, with more than 49,500 PCR tests.

New Jersey also reported 2,200 new positive cases and 13 more deaths on Friday.
