PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- North Philadelphia Democratic State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta has thrown his hat in for the Pennsylvania U.S. Senate race in 2022. If elected, he would make history.

Kenyatta made the announcement on Thursday via Twitter after an appearance on MSNBC.

If elected, the 30-year-old native Philadelphian would be the first openly LGBTQ person of color to serve in the U.S. Senate.

His campaign promise is to help working families and address challenges such as generational poverty, minimum wage, healthcare, climate change and civil rights.

Over the past year, Kenyatta has gained popularity as an outspoken advocate for correcting systemic disparity, making frequent appearances on cable networks.

His announcement comes more than a week after Lt. Gov. John Fetterman announced his campaign for the senate seat.
