Only one house can win PECO’s holiday lights bracket competition

Instagram users can vote for their favorite decorated homes all this week

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Move over Clark Griswold, PECO thinks the king or queen of Christmas lights is right here in the Delaware Valley.

PECO is hosting a competition for residents to show off their holiday light displays. Think of it as March Madness, but instead of 68 schools, there are 78 homes vying for first place.

The competition is taking place all on PECO’s Instagram account. Users can see pictures of decorated houses across Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Philadelphia and York counties, then vote for their favorite in Instagram Stories.

“Our followers actually vote for their favorite houses. The person who wins each round after a 24-hour period will move on to the next round,” explained PECO spokesperson Tim Gallagher.

In a time of social distancing and high gas prices, Gallagher said this is PECO’s way of helping to spread some holiday cheer.

“We’re bringing it right to you so you can honestly stay at home, you can view some of these houses that are unbelievable — they really go all out,” he said.

A first-place winner will be crowned later this week, and they will receive tickets to things like a Flyers game, the Philadelphia Zoo, the Franklin Institute, ice skating rinks and more. Runners-up will get prizes, too.

“To be able to do this in all the different counties that we support, it kind of just shows that everyone has this civic pride about their neighborhood, their house, their community,” added Gallagher. “You’re really seeing that support throughout this Instagram competition.”
