PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Starting on June 1, PECO bills will go up for some customers.
PECO said customers who receive default supply rather than purchasing energy from a supplier will see a 3% increase per month, about $5 more per month for typical customers.
The increase is for the supply portion of the customer’s bill. The reason, the utility company said, is because of PJM Interconnection’s market prices. PJM is a regional transmission organization (RTO) that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity.
In a statement, PECO said, “This latest increase underscores a growing and unsustainable supply gap and the urgent need for PJM and the broader industry to do more to bring reliable, affordable electric supply onto the system. Doing business as usual is not an option.”
A PJM spokesperson told KYW Newsradio the company is doing everything it can to bring new supply to the system. “Currently, there are thousands of megawatts of power that PJM has approved to connect to the grid that have not connected due to forces beyond PJM’s control, including state and local permitting delays.”
PECO has also recommended customers visit their billing support page for more information on the increases and other resources.
