PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A union representing PECO workers is likely to vote in favor of a strike authorization as negotiations with the utility stretch on without an agreement on a new contract.
PECO workers have been without a contract for more than 7 weeks.
President of IBEW Local 614 Larry Anastasi said the bargaining process has been disrespectful and workers are prepared to vote in favor of the strike authorization.
“We know how important we are, and it’s getting to be time that people need to realize this, so we’re not gonna be around. If we disappear, I've got a use for everybody. It ain’t gonna be pleasant,” he said.
The union represents more than 1500 PECO workers who serve as mechanics, linemen, gas technicians and others.
Workers want higher wages and improvements to healthcare and retirement benefits.
“People used to retire in their mid-50s doing these jobs. And now all the people we have here, they’re in their early 60s and still can’t retire,” Anastasi said.
PECO Chief Operating Officer Nicole LeVine denied claims of disrespect during the bargaining process.
“We are just laser-focused and committed to reaching a good and fair, equitable agreement for our employees and our customers,” she said.
Approval does not mean workers will walk off the job, but the utility says it is prepared to handle a work stoppage if necessary.
The result of the vote is expected to be announced Saturday evening.
