PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are searching for a driver they said struck and killed a pedestrian in North Philadelphia early Sunday morning.
It happened around 1:45 a.m. Authorities said a white Honda was speeding down 12th Street and Lehigh Avenue when it suddenly hit Nafeece Acquil Jenkins, 32, as he crossed the street.
Jenkins died at the scene just minutes later.
Police said the driver got away on foot. The car remained at the scene with the bumper missing and the windshield smashed.
"You didn't have to hit him like a bowling ball and keep going," said Sharon Carter, Jenkins' mother. "Just turn yourself in and get closure."
She told our newsgathering partners at NBC10 it was hard for anyone not to love her son.
"He's a father, he’s an uncle, he’s a friend," said Derrick Cave, Jenkins' uncle. "We just ask that you turn yourself in, man. It wasn’t fair to him. It wasn’t fair at all. It’s hurting the family.”
Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact police at 215-686-8477.
