PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A key access point for area expressways will be restored around noon on Friday, when PennDOT opens the newly rebuilt ramp from the Betsy Ross Bridge to southbound I-95.
It's been three years since westbound drivers on the Betsy Ross Bridge were able to continue directly onto southbound I-95. That ramp, as well as the ramp from Aramingo and Adams avenues to southbound I-95 have been rebuilt, says PennDOT spokesman Brad Rudolph.
"It's really going to improve traffic flow and the interchange movement from the surface streets right on up and down on the mainline," Rudolph said.
Until now, westbound drivers on the Betsy were diverted along a two-mile detour up Torresdale Avenue and down Harbison Avenue to get on I-95 southbound at Bridge Street.
Rudolph says this ends the second of five phases of work to rebuild the interchange.
"All these ramp structures, if you ever look at a map of 95 at the Betsy Ross Bridge, there are a lot of ramps."
Rudolph says work to finish punch-list items on this $97 million phase will continue through the end of the year.
