PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Bob Casey has undergone a scheduled surgery for prostate cancer.
His office reports the surgery went well and Casey shouldn't need further treatment.
"Casey and his family appreciate the well-wishes and extraordinary support from every corner of the commonwealth, and he looks forward to getting back to a normal schedule after a period of rest and recovery."
Casey was diagnosed with cancer in January.
A Scranton native, the Democrat is serving in his third term as Pennsylvania senator, a term that will end in January 2025.
He is chairman of the Special Committee on Aging and serves on the Finance Committee, Help Committee and Select Committee on Intelligence.
Casey is already the longest-serving Democratic U.S. senator in Pennsylvania history. He has not said if he would seek a fourth term.
He served as Pennsylvania auditor general from 1997 to 2005, and then as state treasurer from 2005 to 2007.
