PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) —In an effort to give dogs a loving family and home this holiday season, the Pennsylvania SPCA is hosting Home for the Howlidays.

The event will take place Saturday at 350 East Erie Avenue in Feltonville from noon to 6:30 p.m. All dog adoption fees will be waived.

They are hosting Home for the Howlidays because many animal shelters in the area and throughout the country are at capacity, due in part to an uptick in owners surrendering pets.

Many pet owners choose to “rehome” their animals because of lack of time or experience in taking care of their pet, finances, the animal’s health or age, boredom or disinterest and behavioral issues, according to FOUR PAWS International.

Approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters every year, according to the ASPCA. Of those, 3.1 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Adoptions at the PSPCA shelters in the area and around the country have been very slow, according to PSPCA.

The PSPCA hopes Saturday’s event will help many dogs find a home and open up space in the shelter.
