PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)Transgender students are once again allowed to choose which bathrooms they want to use in the Perkiomen Valley School District in Montgomery County.

Monday night, the school board reversed the controversial bathroom policy, which was adopted back in October by the Republican-controlled board. Voters elected a new Democratic majority to the board in November.

Monday’s vote to reverse the bathroom rule was 6-3.

The policy had required students to use locker room toilets and bathrooms that corresponded with their anatomy at birth. Those who supported that policy said it was about respecting students’ right to privacy. People who opposed it, however, said it endangered the safety of trans students.
