PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Nonprofit organizations all over the region, such as ACCT Philly, are hoping to raise critical operating funds this Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3. (Scroll to the end of this article for a list of nonprofits that could use your help.)

Animals suffering from gunshot or stab wounds, or other injuries like car accidents, that end up in ACCT Philly’s care need immediate veterinary attention and sometimes hospitalization.

“We take in a lot of dogs and cats who come in injured. They need to go to an off-site hospital, and that’s pretty expensive,” said Sarah Barnett, executive director of the city’s open intake shelter.

That emergency off-site care cost the nonprofit about $300,000 in the last year, she said.

“We do everything we can here, but we are looking for donations. They are being matched, thanks to generous donors, so we’re really excited about that. So if you donate one dollar, it turns into two — and that’s a huge difference. The donations people make on Giving Tuesday will go twice as far in saving lives.”

Their goal is $120,000, and that will go toward the emergency medical services that save animals’ lives.

“You know, that $100 donation can give a dog oxygen for a couple more minutes. Or look at a critical exam from an emergency vet at one in the morning,” she said. “Because we are a 24-hour organization, but we don’t have a vet here at 1 a.m.”

Barnett says to anyone who wants to help, but who can’t afford to give money, there is always a need to adopt or foster an animal in need of a home, or to volunteer with ACCT Philly.

Giving Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday ...
