PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Department of Public Health said officials discovered the city’s first case of bird flu in a wild snow goose.
Officials found the sick goose on Jan. 11 on 59th Street, near Carroll Park, in West Philadelphia. After some testing, they found the bird was positive for the virus.
Anyone who may have come in contact with the bird is urged to call the department’s Division of Disease Control at 215-685-6741. However, health officials stress that this is not cause for alarm. They said the risk to the general public of contracting the virus remains low.
There are no known cases of bird flu in humans in the city.
Earlier this month, the Pennsylvania Game Commission said roughly 200 snow geese in the greater Allentown area were killed by the bird flu.
