PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia officials announced they are bringing back One Philly HBCU Week for another year, with an even bigger lineup.
The traditions and culture of historically black colleges and universities, and their Greek organizations, have been a powerful tool for Black advancement. As a graduate of Lincoln University and an alumna of Delta Sigma Theta, Mayor Cherelle Parker is a champion of the experience.
“We have that excellence right here in our region, and that excellence is worth celebrating and investing in,” she said.
Last year, she inaugurated the Battle of the Legends football game between Delaware State and Norfolk State, both coached by former Eagles. This year, there will be a second game: Lincoln versus Virginia Union, with a halftime show by Ludacris.
There will also be a Battle of the Bands featuring six schools, including Jackson State, also known as the Sonic Boom of the South.
Deputy Mayor Vanessa Garrett Harley said there will also be a college fair and a job fair with more than 100 employers.
“Some of the companies coming are saying they will hire on the spot,” she said.
HBCU Week will take place from Oct. 27 to 31.
