SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Heavy rain and strong wind gusts are expected to arrive Friday and linger through Saturday across the region.
"We are expecting the strongest winds to generally be very late [Friday] into Saturday morning, and then might start to see some improvement as we get into late Saturday afternoon," said Sarah Johnson with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly.
"A widespread, soaking rain across the area. The worst of the conditions, especially with wind, tidal flooding, is expected during the day on Saturday."
The soggy weather stems from a tropical storm warning along the East Coast. Landfall is expected in North Carolina on Saturday.
Wind gusts in our region could reach up to 60 miles per hour, and a few inches of rain could fall. Moderate flooding is possible in some areas of South Jersey, particularly shore towns.
Scott Evans, Atlantic City emergency management coordinator, said some places that don't usually flood may see a foot of water or more.
"If we do get rain during the high tide, that could make things just a little bit worse," he said. High tide on Saturday is at 2:20 p.m.
Evans said one of his biggest concerns is flooding in older homes that haven't been raised.
"Although 12 to 18 inches of water may not seem like a lot in our streets, it's a lot for us because a lot of homes are at street level, so we could see homes getting flooded as well," he added.
He said water rescue teams will be ready to go if needed.
