Detention center at new police headquarters closed after backed-up pipes leak

People being held there have been moved to another facility

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A pipe drainage issue has caused a stomach-turning situation at the new Philadelphia Police Department headquarters at N. Broad and Callowhill streets.

Several sources say pipes are backing up at the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office and are leaking into the lockup. They say the detention center has been closed until further notice.

Sources tell KYW Newsradio people being held there have been moved to another facility.

The Police Department is in the process of moving its headquarters from the Roundhouse at 7th and Race streets to the building formerly occupied by the Philadelphia Inquirer.
