PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — How does music make you feel? Classical music buffs and novices alike can be part of an experiment the Philadelphia Orchestra is conducting this summer.
The Philadelphia Orchestra is performing two single-composer concerts: A concert on July 31 will feature all Mozart, then all Beethoven on Aug. 1. Before and after the Beethoven concert, guests will be presented with a QR code asking how the music made them feel.
“There are studies about how particularly classical music can really have an impact on you, so we’re doing a little experiment to see how we can measure it,” said Ryan Fleur, president and CEO of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
For example, when the musicians in the orchestra took the test, they found that while they were listening to the music, their heart rates aligned. The survey intends to measure the emotional and physical impact of classical music.
“When you have an ensemble like the Philadelphia Orchestra, there’s something you just feel, even if it’s for the very first time,” Fleur added.
“To be able to quantify how the audience feels about being in the concert hall experience with music played at such a high level, we’re curious to see what the results are going to be.”
